3D Model Export Scripts - 3Ds Max
Preparing the models for upload using 3Ds Max
We have created an export script for models in 3Ds Max to make sure the exported visual and collision models are aligned in Sandbox. Max version tested: 2021
For max compatibility, please also consider running the 3D Model Export Scripts - 3Ds Max Export Preparation before exporting using this script.
Download the Script
Installing the export script
Edit the exportPaths.txt file with your local paths:
importFolder = D:\STEPfilefolder\ visualExportFolder = D:\Export\ collisionExportFolder = D:\Export\
In 3Ds Max (2021 tested), run (or drag and drop into viewport) the “exportVisAndCol_macro.ms” script. Optional: You can also do the same with the “collapseSelection_macro.ms” which can be used to prepare the 3D models for export.
Go to Customize > Customize User Interface > Toolbars (tab)> Category (drop-down) > Custom + Drag and drop the “Export FBX, OBJ.” and “Collapse geometry selection.” script into the Max Main Toolbar.
Exporting your model from 3Ds max
Please read the instructions below carefully. Not following these rules can result in unexpected results, in particular with collision models.
Select the 3d model you want to export. Make sure the model follows the following rules:
The visual model and the collision model can be the same model or 2 separate models, but only one single mesh object can be selected on export.
The model can not be part of a hierarchy (it can not have a parent)
Reset transforms (scale and rotation)
Reset XForm can often be used to achieve this (save before use)
Set the pivot point of the object to the desired location and make sure it’s aligned to the world
Collision models should not contain a lot of unnecessary polygons since this will affect performance.
Collision models should not have a material assigned.
Make sure the visual model and collision model use the same pivot point with the same local rotations.
Set the “Export filename”
Click on the “Export selected object as + .fbx/.obj” button depending on which model you are exporting.
Make sure you do not rename the files between export of Collision and Visual model. They need to have the same name.
Import Model into Sandbox
Once your 3D model is properly exported in 3Ds Max using the export script, you can proceed to upload your model using the 3D Models system for Cloud.
